Zehnder’s Heirloom Applesauce Cake

Michigan Applesauce
Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ cups sugar
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 2 tsp. ground cinnamon
- ½ cup vegetable shortening
- 2 cup applesauce
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
Directions:
- Sift flour and sugar with the salt, baking powder, soda, and cinnamon.
- Add shortening and applesauce and beat at medium speed using an electric mixer for 1 ½ minutes.
- Add eggs and beat for two more minutes.
- Fold in the walnuts.
- Pour batter into a greased and floured 9″ X 13″ cake pan.
- Bake at 325°F for 35-45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Allow to cool and sprinkle with powdered sugar.
Tip:
- When using a glass pan, cook for a shorter period of time.
