Zehnder’s Heirloom Applesauce Cake

Recommended Apple Variety:

Michigan Applesauce

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups sugar
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 2 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup vegetable shortening
  • 2 cup applesauce
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
Directions:
  1. Sift flour and sugar with the salt, baking powder, soda, and cinnamon.
  2. Add shortening and applesauce and beat at medium speed using an electric mixer for 1 ½ minutes.
  3. Add eggs and beat for two more minutes.
  4. Fold in the walnuts.
  5. Pour batter into a greased and floured 9″ X 13″ cake pan.
  6. Bake at 325°F for 35-45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Allow to cool and sprinkle with powdered sugar.
Tip:
  • When using a glass pan, cook for a shorter period of time.
