DeWitt, Mich. – Nearly 200 lodging properties throughout Michigan are participating in the “Check In To Michigan Apples” program this harvest season. The program was developed by the Michigan Apple Committee (MAC) to allow lodging properties to offer a uniquely Michigan front desk experience. The focus of the promotion is to boost visits to farm markets and pick your own orchards throughout the state and encourage hotels to buy Michigan apples year round.
“‘Check In To Michigan Apples' introduces a turn-key program to promote locally grown produce and agritourism for hotel guests,” said Denise Yockey, Executive Director of the Michigan Apple Committee. “Some hotels have told us the concept is long overdue as they obviously want to champion their area to their guests.”
Each of the participating lodging properties received a basket filled with Michigan apples as well as a display rack full of Michigan Farm Market & U-Pick Directories. Deliveries were made to participating lodgings and local convention and visitors' bureaus in August and early September.
“While we started the hotels with this free kit, we hope they will continue to buy Michigan apples from local farms or their food service suppliers and be ambassadors of Michigan agriculture,” Yockey said.
MAC's “Check In To Michigan Apples” promotion was endorsed by the Michigan Department of Agriculture; Travel Michigan; Michigan Hotel, Motel & Resort Association; West Michigan Tourist Association; Michigan Festivals & Events Association; and Circle Michigan.
The Michigan Apple Committee is a grower-funded nonprofit organization devoted to promotion, education and research activities to distinguish the Michigan apple and encourage its consumption by consumers in Michigan and around the world. For more information, visit www.MichiganApples.com.
