(DeWitt, Mich.) – Michigan Apple movement hit an all-time high for the month of October, with total shipments breaking 1.6 million cases.
“Movement has been very, very strong for several weeks now so we’re not entirely surprised to announce that overall we’ve had our best October ever,” said Denise Donohue, executive director of the Michigan Apple Committee. “It is a monumental achievement for Michigan Apple growers and shippers, especially considering where we were a year ago.”
Michigan’s apple production was down 40 percent last year due to adverse weather in the late spring and summer. This year production is estimated at 27 million bushels, up 7 million bushels from the five-year average. Only a portion of the harvest has been packed so far.
According to figures from the USDA, Michigan Apple shipments for the month totaled 1.6 million cases, at least 26 percent above the next closest year on record.
The Michigan Apple Committee is a grower-funded nonprofit organization devoted to promotion, education and research activities to distinguish the Michigan Apple and encourage its consumption by consumers in Michigan and around the world. For more information, visit MichiganApples.com.
