Michigan grown Honeycrisp consistently first place in consumer taste tests

DeWitt, Mich. – Michigan Apple shippers have released the state’s 2011 crop earlier this week to the marketplace.  The Michigan Honeycrisp consistently earns first place in consumer taste tests, beating Honeycrisp apples grown in other parts of the United States as well as other varieties.

“The Michigan Honeycrisp is always the most popular apple during harvest season,” said Denise Donohue, executive director of the Michigan Apple Committee.  “People cannot get enough of this apple, which tastes best from a northern climate.”

Michigan’s autumn temperatures are ideal for growing the tasty Honeycrisp apples that consumers love.  The apple is crisp and especially noted for being juicy.  It is a good apple for snacking and salads.  The Michigan Honeycrisp is usually sold-out by November.

“Our apple growers have planted many more Honeycrisp apple trees over the last five years to keep up with consumer demand,” said Donohue.  “Usually the Honeycrisp is sold out by November 1, but this year our growers are expecting to have more of them for sale.”

Some of the state’s farm markets offer pick-your-own Honeycrisp apples.  To find them visit MichiganApples.com.  Click on Where to Go/Buy and then Farm Markets.  The red apple denotes Honeycrisp availability.  People with an iPhone® or iPad® can also download the free Michigan Farm Market application from the Apple® app store, to find nearby on-farm markets, farmers’ markets and cider mills.

The Michigan Apple Committee is a grower-funded, nonprofit organization devoted to promotion, education and research activities to distinguish the Michigan Apple and encourage its consumption by consumers in Michigan and around the world.
