2018 Apple Contest Recipe winners announced
MAC crowns winners of Zehnder’s Snowfest Apple Recipe Contest
LANSING, Mich. — Congratulations to the 2018 Michigan Apple Recipe Contest winners! The competition was held on Jan. 24 at Zehnder’s Snowfest in Frankenmuth, Mich. This is the 13th year the Michigan Apple Committee has sponsored the event.
First, second and third place winners were awarded in each category, which included desserts, pastas and sandwiches. Colleen Gawrylowicz of Caro, Mich. won the Grand Prize, a trip to Orange Beach, Ala. and entry in the World Food Championships, with her dish, ‘Tortellini Salad’.
“The recipe contest allows us, and these talented amateur cooks and bakers, to showcase the versatility of Michigan Apples,” said Diane Smith, executive director of MAC. “This is the fifth year the grand prize winner will receive entry in the World Food Championships, which has definitely added some excitement to the contest.”
Linda Schmidt of Kawkawlin, Mich. placed first in the pasta category, followed by Gawrylowicz in second place and Carol Kammer of Marysville, Mich., in third place.
In the sandwich category, first place was awarded to Melissa Kildow of Grand Blanc, Mich., second place went to Judy Jones of Bay City, Mich. and third place went to Linda Cutler of Applegate, Mich.
Jessica Bryant of Shepherd, Mich. took home first place in the dessert category, followed by April Cutler of Applegate, Mich., in second place and Susan Datte of Freeland, Mich., in third place.
This year, first place winners received $100, a Kitchen Aid mixer, 40 pounds of Pioneer Sugar, 30 pounds of Nightingale Pastry Flour, two tickets to a Zehnder’s dinner show of their choice and a Michigan Apple gift basket.
Second place winners received $100, 20 pounds of Pioneer Sugar, 20 pounds of Nightingale Pastry Flour, dinner for four to Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth and a Michigan Apple gift basket. First and second place winners advanced to the grand prize competition.
In addition, third place winners received $50, 10 pounds of Pioneer Sugar, 10 pounds of Nightingale Pastry Flour, dinner for two to Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth and a Michigan Apple gift basket.
