Michigan Applesauce Brown Sugar Pop Tarts

This Michigan Apple Pop Tarts recipe combines the sweetness of applesauce and brown sugar with pie crust to create a flaky treat. Serve this as a sweet breakfast or dessert!

Recommended Apple Varieties:

Empire, Gala, Ida Red, Jonagold, Jonathan, or McIntosh.

INGREDIENTS:
  • 1/2 cup Michigan applesauce
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 2 Tbs. ground cinnamon
  • 4 store-bought refrigerated pie crusts
  • 3 Tbs. butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 4 Tbs. milk or cream
  • 2 Tbs. pearl sugar sprinkles

 SERVING SIZE:

12″x16″ sheet of pop tarts, cut into pieces.

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine applesauce, brown sugar and 2 Tbs. cinnamon until smooth. Set aside.
  4. On a large cutting board, unroll two of the pie crusts and layer with the edges of the circles overlapping. Roll them out together and use a pastry wheel to create a rectangle, approximately 12” x 16”.
  5. Transfer the crust to prepared sheet pan. Spread the applesauce mixture on the center of the crust, leaving a 1-inch border around all of the edges. Roll the remaining two pie crusts together and trim to the same size. Gently transfer it to lay evenly over the bottom crust and filling.
  6. Use your fingers to pinch the two crusts together to seal them completely, then use a fork to gently seal the edges to ensure the filling will stay in the dough.
  7. Use a toothpick to poke holes all over the top of the top crust. Brush with softened butter.
  8. Bake for about 25 minutes or until the crust is golden brown. Remove from the oven and allow to cool.
  9. In a medium bowl, combine powdered sugar, 1 tsp. of cinnamon and milk or cream, until the mixture reaches a smooth, spreadable consistency.
  10. Drizzle icing over top of the tart. Garnish with pearl sugar sprinkles. Slice and serve.
