Michigan Farm Markets' Number One Fan

Sterling Heights, Mich. – Jim Parker has been visiting farm markets all over Michigan for 30 years. He has been to over 400 Michigan Farm Markets in his quest to find the perfect apple and the best tasting cider. Now, he has published a guide for people who are looking for a fun family outing.

“We were looking for a low-cost activity that would help promote the family…I wanted us to do something that the kids would always remember,” said Parker.

His book, Sharing My Experiences, describes the hundreds of orchards and farm markets Parker and his family have enjoyed throughout the years.

Parker usually travels to Michigan orchards about 8 to 10 weekends during the fall. He and his wife, Bev, and their three children have driven up to 200 miles and back seeking fun. He says there are about 30 farm markets he hasn't yet visited.

“I have what I call my ‘apple bibles' – where I've taken the Michigan Department of Agriculture's farm market directory (which can be accessed at www.michigan.gov) and maps, and charted out trips,” Parker said.

Jim has advice for families who are interested in visiting Michigan Farm Markets. “Being spontaneous is okay…no pre-planning, just go! And remember, it's never too late to start making memories with your family.”
