Michigan Hard Cider Shows Strong Market Potential

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan-brewed hard apple cider would have great consumer acceptance and strong market potential, according to a study conducted by a Michigan State University research team, and funded by the Michigan Apple Committee.
The project involved on-site interviews of managers of Michigan microbrews, pubs, restaurants and beverage retailers. According to researchers, much enthusiasm was expressed over the hard cider product produced from Michigan apples.
“The hard cider product is another way to enjoy the great flavors of Michigan apples!” said Denise Yockey, Executive Director of the Michigan Apple Committee. “This research study is showing great potential for what a value-added apple beverage could mean to some Michigan apple growers.”
Other components of the study looked at product development and taste-testing. Researchers developed a hard cider blend of McIntosh and Jonathan apples and tested it against other commercial hard ciders. Wine and beer clubs around Michigan were used as focus groups to evaluate the taste, as well as the appearance and aroma of the product.
The Michigan Department of Agriculture, U.S. Department of Agriculture and Project GREEEN also contributed funds to this project.
