(DeWitt, Mich.) – Your local school could win up to $5,000 by entering the Michigan Apple Committee’s (MAC) 6th Annual Michigan Apple School Sweepstakes, which runs through next spring.

To participate, students at accredited K-12 Michigan schools should collect proofs of purchase off Michigan Apple bags and from participating farm markets.  Each proof of purchase counts as one entry into next spring’s drawing.  Full details and rules of the sweepstakes may be found at MichiganApples.com under the Schools & Kids section, as well as a poster to print.

“The program has grown, and last year over 15,500 Michigan Apple proofs of purchase were submitted by students,” said MAC Executive Director Denise Donohue.  “This piece of our socially-conscious marketing program, allows students to take action through their parents’ apple purchases that may result in a financial gift to their schools.  And it incentivizes healthy eating.”

Michigan Apples have an estimated annual economic impact of $800 million per year for the state.  This year Michigan is estimated to grow over 26 million bushels of apples and is the third-largest apple-producing state in the nation.

The contest continues through the spring.  Entries must be postmarked by April 15, 2012.  Schools or their fundraising arm are responsible for submitting the proofs along with an official entry form.  Prizes are $5,000 for first place; $3,000 for second place; and $1,000 for third place.

Michigan Apple Committee is a grower-funded nonprofit organization devoted to promotion, education and research activities to distinguish the Michigan apple and encourage its consumption in Michigan and around the world.  For more information, visit MichiganApples.com.
