Governor Whitmer Proclaims October Michigan Apple Month

Recognizing the Economic and Societal Impact of the Industry

LANSING, Mich. – Governor Gretchen Whitmer has proclaimed October to be Michigan Apple Month. This month, celebrate and acknowledge the Michigan Apple industry and its growers.

Enjoying apples, orchards, and cider is an essential part of autumn in Michigan. There are dozens of apple varieties available to consumers in grocery stores, cider mills, and about 200 farm markets and U-picks. Apples are Michigan’s largest and most valuable fruit crop, ranking as the second-largest apple-producing state in the nation.

“Apples and apple products are a part of Michigan’s culture, as a fresh local product, a healthy snack choice, and a quintessential fall activity,” said Diane Smith, executive director of the Michigan Apple Committee. “Whether we get them from orchards, farm markets, cider mills, or grocery stores, the flavor of this season is Michigan Apple.”

Last year, Michigan’s 850 apple growers harvested an estimated 1.28 billion pounds of apples. Growers are estimating a similar-sized crop for 2025. Michigan has more than 17.6 million apple trees spanning over 38,000 acres.

“Michigan Apples are vital to the state’s agriculture industry and economy. Michigan Apple growers are dedicated to producing safe, quality fruit,” said Smith. “Our industry appreciates the recognition of the hard work and dedication of Michigan’s apple growers.”
