Lansing, Mich. – Denise Yockey, Executive Director of the Michigan Apple Committee, has been elected Vice Chair of the US Apple Export Council, headquartered in Washington, D.C.

Yockey, who will serve under apple shipper Charles Andola II of New Paltz, New York, represents Michigan on the export council, which pursues the export interests of six major apple-producing states marketing apples in five regions around the globe.

“Exports are very important to Michigan, which is focused on increasing our market share in Mexico and other Latin American countries,” Yockey said. Approximately four percent of Michigan's fresh apple crop is exported, a level that is expected to grow with the recent opening of Mexico to Michigan apples.

The Michigan Apple Committee is a grower-funded nonprofit organization devoted to promotion, education and research activities to distinguish the Michigan apple and encourage its consumption by consumers in Michigan and around the world. MAC represents the approximately 1,000 apple growers in Michigan who produce apples for retail, processing and farm market opportunities. For more information, visit www.MichiganApples.com.
