The apple blossom has reigned as the state flower of Michigan for more than a hundred years, and with its delicate petals and sweet aroma, it will endure many more.
Michigan is entering another season for apple blossoms. Orchards statewide will begin blooming as early as late April through mid-May depending mostly on spring temperatures.
Blossom time is a critical time to determine the size of the fall apple harvest. A hard frost can kill the extra-sensitive flower tissue. Rain or high wind during bloom can keep honeybees from doing their pollination work. Thankfully, the cluster of blossoms emerging over several days can ensure a harvest, no matter the weather.
This bloom will mean another successful year for growers throughout Michigan, as the blossom indicates the bountiful harvest of the fall apple season. As a member of the rose family, it is both colorful and highly fragrant. Blossom color can vary according to the type of apple the tree produces but is most widely recognized as white with a pink tint.
Similar to the color tours of autumn, drivers in Michigan can also take apple blossom tours, particularly in the Western part of the state. Apple orchards in Western Michigan stretch from Traverse City to the Southern corner of the state. Every spring these orchards are flooded with the color and aroma of these delicate flowers painting the roadsides, which makes this an ideal spring color tour.
