Standout apple recipes will earn winners gourmet cooking mixer

(DeWitt, Mich.) – As apples continue to be included in more types of unconventional dishes from roasted vegetables to salsa, the Michigan Apple Committee is on a quest to find the most unique, tastiest recipes featuring Michigan's largest and most valuable fruit crop.
The 2008 Michigan Apple Recipe Contest is now underway, with entries being accepted until Jan. 31, 2009. Recipes must be original and should specify a recommended variety of Michigan Apples. Entries will be judged on taste and originality.
Winners of the contest will each receive a KitchenAid® 4.5-quart stand mixer, valued at $299.
“We're on the lookout for some standout apple recipes that family and friends really rave about,” said Denise Donohue, executive director of the Michigan Apple Committee. “We often rely on professionals to concoct recipes for us, but sometimes the most delicious dishes come straight from the neighbor's kitchen.”
The contest is open to amateur cooks only. Professional cooks, chefs, bakers and home economists are not eligible. Recipe entries can be mailed or emailed to staff@MichiganApples.com and should include contestant's name, address, phone number and email.

Recipes can use either fresh or processed Michigan apples, such as applesauce, cider or juice.
Michigan has about 1,000 apple growers and as an industry contributes about $700 million of annual economic impact.
The Michigan Apple Committee is a grower-funded, nonprofit organization devoted to market development, education and research activities to distinguish the Michigan apple and encourage its consumption by consumers in Michigan and around the world.
