Michigan Apple Committee to host first-time pie contest at Eastern Market

(Detroit, Mich.) – Calling all pie makers!  Michigan Apple Committee (MAC) will host a Michigan Apple Pie Contest during the Michigan Apple Festival at Eastern Market on Saturday, Oct. 9.

Amateur bakers will bring their homemade pies to the Eastern Market for judging.  Pies will be rated by a panel of judges on various qualities including appearance, taste, crust, apple texture and overall appeal.

Entries must include Michigan Apples with the suggested variety or varieties.  Preregistration is required and can be completed by emailing your pie recipe to staff@MichiganApples.com.  Please use subject line:  Eastern Market Pie Contest and include your name, address, phone number.  Emails should be received by 5 pm. Wednesday, Oct. 6.

Winners will receive cash prizes in the following amounts:

1st Place – $100
2nd Place – $50
3rd Place – $25

Michigan Apple Festival at Eastern Market will feature cooking demonstrations, apple sampling, cider pressing, kids activities and appearances by the Michigan Apple mascot “Little Mac” and the 2010 Michigan Apple Queen Kirstin Miller of Vassar.

“It will be a fun-filled day for the entire family so be sure to come out and see us,” said Denise Donohue, MAC executive director.

The pie contest will begin at 1 p.m.  Pie entries should arrive by noon.

MAC also sponsors an annual statewide pie contest which will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2011 at Zehnder's Restaurant in Frankenmuth.  Entries must contain Michigan Apples and Pioneer Sugar, a Michigan product.  Details will be released within the next couple of weeks at MichiganApples.com/contests.
