Dearborn, Mich. – The legendary Johnny Appleseed visited elementary schools in Dearborn today. He spoke at Salina Elementary at 10:30 a.m., and Iris Becker Elementary at 2:30 p.m.
The presentation at each school lasted 30 minutes, and followed with approximately 15 minutes for the students to ask questions. It was sponsored by the Michigan Apple Committee.
The unique American hero shared his story, about how and why he decided to begin planting apple trees. Many people think Johnny Appleseed is a myth, but this presentation illustrates that he was a real person living on the frontier in the 19th century.
Iris Becker Elementary is one of 25 recipients statewide of the Federal Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Grant, which is why the apple committee selected it for the special program. The grants are awarded to get children eating healthier snacks, including apples.
The Michigan Apple Committee is a grower-funded nonprofit organization devoted to promotion, education and research activities to distinguish the Michigan apple and encourage its consumption by consumers in Michigan and around the world.
