A warm, steamy kitchen on a cold Michigan winter day. The spicy, comforting fragrance of an apple pie baking in the oven. No wonder the American Pie Council (APC) chose the dead of winter to observe National Pie Day!
National Pie Day, created by the APC, will be observed on Sunday, January 23. According to the APC, whose mission of which it is to maintain America's pie heritage, the celebration provides an opportunity to pass along the love and enjoyment of pie-eating and pie-making.
The Michigan Apple Committee invites you to celebrate National Pie Day with a Michigan apple pie recipe.
“National Pie Day is another opportunity for people to enjoy apple pie, America's favorite pie and all-American dessert,” said Denise Yockey, Executive Director of the Michigan Apple Committee. “Michigan has several fabulous apple varieties that are superior for baking a pie.”
Popular Michigan apple varieties for baking pies (and other items) include Northern Spy, Ida Red, Rome, Golden Delicious, McIntosh and Gala. Michigan apples can also be found in canned pie filling. Or, if you don't want to do the baking, Michigan apples are also used in many store-bought pies!

“A great way to celebrate National Pie Day is to give the gift of pie to a neighbor or friend,” said Linda Hoskins, Executive Director of the American Pie Council. “When we come together with our loved ones, pie is part of that tradition.”
