Frankenmuth, Mich. – Carol Socier of Bay City has beat out over 60 other contestants to win the first annual Michigan's Best Apple Pie Contest. Her recipe for “Snowflake Apple Pecan Crumb Pie” was entered in the crumb topping apple pie category. It scored higher than the other crumb topping entrants, then beat out the highest-scoring double crust pie to win the contest.
Socier's prize package from the Michigan Apple Committee includes a trip to Orlando, Florida, to compete in the National Pie Championships April 21-23, and a $500 cash prize.
The first annual Michigan's Best Apple Pie Contest was held as a part of Zehnder's Snowfest in Frankenmuth. The contest was sponsored by Zehnder's, the Michigan Apple Committee, Pioneer Sugar and WSGW radio.
Second prize in the contest went to Paula Verdun of Burton, with her recipe for “Mary's Apple Pie.” Verdun took home $350 plus an overnight package at Zehnder's Splash Village Hotel and Waterpark.
The third prize winner was Rozanne Rosenfeld of Tawas City with “Roxanne's Best Apple Pie.” Rosenfeld was awarded $200 plus dinner for four at Zehnder's Restaurant.
Fourth prize went to Rebecca Caister of Caro. Caister took home $100 plus dinner for two at Zehnder's Restaurant. The top four recipes can be found at MichiganApples.com.
Pies were tasted by 16 judges including members of the media, and from the apple and sugar industries.
“We are excited to have a partnership with Zehnder's for this contest,” said Denise Yockey, Executive Director of the Michigan Apple Committee. “It is a fun event and it illustrates how many different varieties of Michigan apples can be used to make delicious pie!”
