Welcome to the new Michigan Apple Blog

4

Welcome to the new Michigan Apple blog, where you will find information on everything of interest pertaining to the state’s apple industry.

This is an exciting venture, which I expect will generate conversation, comments and of course, interest in Michigan Apples.

The 950 growers here in the Great Lakes State pride themselves on producing a wide variety of flavorful apples. Michigan ranks third in the nation in terms of apple production, averaging about 20 million bushels or 840 million pounds of apples. That’s a whole lot of apples and that means a whole lot to discuss.

Feel free to ask questions, offer comments and even make suggestions. Some of the contributors to this blog will include Michigan Apple Queen Laura Dietrich, Michigan Apple Nutrition Spokesperson Judy MacNeill, in addition to the Michigan Apple Committee staff and our growers.

Not only is the blog new, so is this web site. Over the past few months, we’ve given MichiganApples.com a major facelift. It has a new look and feel, with a goal of making it hip, modern and interactive. So, in addition to the blog, we’re expecting very soon to add streaming video and audio. Stay tuned and let us know what you think…

  1. How can I remove the wax/and or/ lac/resin from the apple before I eat it?

  2. The wax is made to adhere to the skin so really the only way to get rid of it is to peel it. However, the apple skin is where most of the nutrients are found. You may want visit your local farm market and see if the grower there can provide you with some apples without wax.
For further information on apple wax, you may want to visit USApple.org, the organization representing the national apple industry. Thanks.

  3. I was very disappointed to read the rules for the Michigan apple pie baking contest. I realize that Pioneer Sugar is likely helping to sponsor the contest. However, as a type 1 diabetic, I think the contest should include apple pies that do not contain added sugar. Maybe this could be a seperate category. With so many type 1 and type 2 diabetics in our state and country and with the national emphasis on keeping people’s weight down, I think sugarless apple pies would be a big hit. Maybe you could get Splenda to co-sponsor.

  4. I noted with interest this recent Grand Rapids Press article -

One way we can truly support locally grown Michigan apples is to insist that our grocers are selling Michigan apples. They are available from local farmers and fruit packers well into the summer. Almost 11 months of the year! Be sure and mention your preference for Michigan apples to the produce manager of your local grocery store! Better tasting, less food miles, and a real boost to Michigan’s economy!
