Grand Rapids Press columnist David Mayo, while missing the mark on his overall assessment of the MSU football team, certainly made a fine observation when he recently said this about Michigan Apples:
THE BUZZ
“On his live blog in the Iowa City Press-Citizen, Andy Hamilton wrote Saturday that when he learned media are allotted one free hot dog and apple in the Spartan Stadium press box, along with concession sales, he opted for a ‘couple of turkey sandwiches’ instead. But here’s the real shame: The apples are Washington-grown. Isn’t this an agriculture-heavy university in an apple-growing state? Just wait until the Michigan Apple Committee gets hold of this issue. Controversy is brewing.”

It seems only logical that Michigan schools and colleges, especially the state’s land grant university, would be loyal to Michigan Apples. Obviously, that’s not always the case.
MSU has increased the presence of Michigan Apples in campus cafeterias from 7 percent in 2004 to more than 50 percent. But it looks like apples haven’t penetrated the high-profile locations. Let’s hope the presence of Michigan Apples continues to improve, along with the record of this fantastic Spartan football team.

Of course! I am surprised that MSU, with it’s agricultural roots, isn’t aware of this. And it’s local food too! All Michigan colleges should be serving 100% Michigan apples, especially during apple-picking time.

This is a prime example of the arrogance at some of our state colleges and universities.
Absolutely, MSU should sell only Michigan apples, especially considering that they receive a huge portion of their revenue from our tax dollars!
The other part of their revenue is generated through tuition costs, which also comes from our pockets.
MSU has fumbled the ball on this one.
