Michigan Apples compete with the best at largest food sports competition

LANSING, Mich. — For the second year, the Michigan Apple Committee’s recipe contest was a Preferred Qualifier at the World Food Championships (WFC). The Michigan Apple Recipe contest, held each January in Frankenmuth, sends the grand prize winner to compete on the national level. MAC has sponsored the Frankenmuth contest for 10 years. The competition challenges cooks to create tasty, unique recipes using Michigan Apples.

Donna Bardocz, amateur cook from Howell, Michigan, finished in the top 10 of the dessert category at this year’s Championship. Bardocz won the grand prize 2015 MAC sponsored event, a food contest at Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth and entry into the World Food Championships. The overall winner of the World Dessert Championship was Lynn Smith, representing Que'n Stew'n & Brew'n. To view the rest of the WFC results, visit https://worldfoodchampionships.com/scores/.

Throughout the year, participants competed in local and regional food competitions across the country for an opportunity to participate at the WFC. The top winners met in Kissimmee, Florida for a chance at the World Food title and a share of $300,000. The event has awarded more than $1 million in prizes and money, spawned a TV series, garnered more than five billion media impressions and launched numerous professional careers for successful contestants.

This year, the MAC was also a sponsor of the WFC’s blogger summit, “Food Fight Write.” The event consisted of informative sessions for bloggers, discussions on interesting food trips and a just-for-bloggers food competition. The MAC made an appearance at the big event, which took place November 3 – 10, sampling Michigan Apple slices at the WFC’s ‘Tasting Village.’

The Michigan Apple Committee is a grower-funded nonprofit organization devoted to marketing, education and research activities to distinguish the Michigan apple and encourage its consumption in Michigan and around the world. For more information, visit www.MichiganApples.com.
