LANSING, Mich. — Congratulations are in order for the Michigan cooks and bakers who took home prizes at the 2014 Michigan Apple Recipe Contest. Susan Datte of Freeland, Mich., won the Grand Prize, a trip to Las Vegas and entry in the World Food Championships, with her dessert “Grandma’s Apple Gruff-In.” Michigan Apple Committee sponsors the contest each year that takes place as part of Zehnder’s Snowfest in Frankenmuth, Mich.
First, second and third place winners were awarded in the following categories: apple pies, apple breads and muffins, apple cobblers and crisps, and miscellaneous apple dishes.
“The recipe contest allows us, and these talented amateur cooks and bakers to showcase the versatility of Michigan Apples,” said MAC Executive Director Diane Smith. “This is the first year the Grand Prize Winner will receive entry in the World Food Championships, which take place in November in Las Vegas. It has definitely added some excitement to the contest.”
In the apple pie category, Joanie Rizzio of Troy, Mich., took home first place, followed by Cynthia Zalewski of Rochester, Mich., in second place, and Wayne Conner of Ray, Mich., in third place.
In the apple breads and muffins category, first place was awarded to Harriet Trisch of Caro, Mich. Second place went to Patti Rizzio of Marquette, Mich., and third place went to Marilyn Spannagel of Unionville, Mich.
In the apple cobblers and crisps category, Patti Rizzio of Marquette, Mich., took home first place, followed by Richard Rizzio of Troy, Mich., in second place, and Marta Dmytrenko of Novi, Mich., in third place.
In the miscellaneous category, Datte received first place for her “Grandma’s Apple Gruff-in” recipe, in addition to being the Grand Prize winner. Following close behind in second place was Jill Mott of Northville, Mich., and Debby Crawford of Warren, Mich., in third place.
This year, first place winners received $100, a Kitchen Aid Mixer, 40 pounds of Pioneer Sugar, 40 pounds of Nightingale Pastry Flour, two tickets to a Zehnder’s dinner show of their choice, and a Michigan Apple gift basket.
Second place winners received $100, 20 pounds of Pioneer Sugar, 20 pounds of Nightingale Pastry Flour, dinner for four to Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth, and a Michigan Apple gift basket. First and second place winners advanced to the Grand Prize Competition.
In addition, third place winners received $50, 10 pounds of Pioneer Sugar, 10 pounds of Nightingale Pastry Flour, dinner for two to Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth, and a Michigan Apple gift basket.
