Michigan Apple Committee leverages buy local movement in marketing plan

LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan Apple Committee (MAC) kicks off the 2013 harvest season with a locally grown marketing campaign targeting Michigan and surrounding states, where the Michigan apple is considered the “local apple.”

The campaign focuses on the many advantages of supporting locally grown apples, including freshness and quality, as well as economic and environmental benefits.

“Locally Grown is a positive program for a number of reasons,” said Diane Smith, MAC executive director. “First, it’s what consumers are looking for. They can find fresh, great-tasting apples grown by their neighbors. They can support a local economy and reduce their carbon footprint because of reduced transportation. It’s a strong movement in our communities and it’s positive for our growers as well, because they take pride in the product they offer.”

Additionally, through the Locally Grown program consumers will have the opportunity to register to win one of three vacation getaway packages to Crystal Mountain in Thompsonville, Michigan. The package includes either golf or ski passes as well as spa visits.  The packages were donated by Crystal Mountain, in support of Michigan’s apple growers.

“For Crystal Mountain to partner with the Michigan Apple Committee is a perfect match,” said Chris MacInnes, COO of Crystal Mountain.  “Crystal Mountain’s focus is on creating a place where our guests have an opportunity to make moments that matter - and that includes a healthy, active lifestyle.  A diet rich with fresh, local fruits and vegetables is a great first step and I can’t think of a better way to spread that message than by helping to promote Michigan Apples.”

Consumers can find more information about the sweepstakes on bags of Michigan apples available in retail stores. They can register and view the official rules at www.MichiganApples.com.

“Consumers in Michigan and our neighboring states can enjoy all Michigan has to offer – fresh, high-quality Michigan apples, and a great vacation experience up north. Now that is ‘Pure Michigan’!” said Smith.

Retailers can obtain items for promotional support from the Michigan Apple Committee. In addition, they can participate in a display contest around the Locally Grown theme.  Display items such as P.O.P. signage, usage charts and more can be requested at http://www.michiganapples.com/point-of-purchase-order-form.html.

The Michigan Apple Committee is a grower-funded nonprofit organization devoted tomarketing, education and research activities to distinguish the Michigan apple and encourage its consumption in Michigan and around the world. For more information, visit MichiganApples.com.
