Applications now available for the 2014 Michigan Apple Queen title

LANSING, Mich. — Women ages 17 - 23 with a strong and definite connection to the Michigan apple industry are encouraged to apply for the 2014 Michigan Apple Queen title. The application deadline is Friday, Oct. 18, 2013. The new queen will be crowned at the Michigan Apple Growers Luncheon at the Great Lakes Expo in Grand Rapids, Mich. at noon on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013. Interested candidates can obtain an application at MichiganApples.com/applequeen.

As an initiative of the Michigan Apple Committee, the Michigan Apple Queen represents the Michigan Apple industry for one year while attending various events and festivals, as well as traveling to schools educating students about apples. The Michigan Apple Queen must be the daughter, sister, niece or granddaughter of a Michigan apple producer, and must be 17 years of age by Dec. 31, 2013, and not over 23 years of age by Dec. 31, 2013. Women interested in applying for this prestigious title must have strong knowledge of the Michigan apple industry, be outgoing, personable and available to make public appearances throughout the year.

The queen and her court will be selected at the annual Michigan Apple Committee grower luncheon, which is a part of the Great Lakes Fruit, Vegetable and Farm Market Expo in December. Contestants compete in an onstage question and answer along with a one-on-one personal interview. Applicants will be judged on their poise, beauty, apple knowledge, public speaking ability and essay response.

In addition, the Michigan Apple Committee and the Michigan State Horticultural Society have increased scholarship amounts for the Queen and her court. The Queen will receive a $5,000 scholarship and the First Runner-Up will receive $2,500 from the Michigan Apple Committee. Additionally, the Michigan State Horticultural Society will contribute a $1,000 scholarship to both Queen and First Runner-Up.

The Michigan Apple Committee is a grower-funded nonprofit organization devoted to marketing, education and research activities to distinguish the Michigan apple and encourage its consumption in Michigan and around the world. For more information, visit www.MichiganApples.com.
