(Frankenmuth, Mich.) – There were apples pies with all sorts of unconventional ingredients, including bacon, jalapeno peppers and even caramel corn.  But the one that stole the show featured a cup of bourbon and was topped with crust cut-outs in the shape of the State of Michigan.

Winners in the 6th Annual Michigan’s Best Apple Pie Contest, held Wednesday, Jan. 26 in Frankenmuth, are:

  • 1st Place - Lois Spruytte of Richmond with “I Spy a Michigan Apple Pie”
  • 2nd Place – Christina McArthur of Goodrich with “Apple of My Pie”
  • 3rd Place – Eric Moon of Royal Oak with “Uncle Eric’s Apple Pie”

Complete recipes are available at MichiganApples.com/award-winning-pies2.

Forty amateur bakers were selected from more than 100 entries to participate in the contest.  Entries are judged in three major categories: taste, texture and appearance.

Sponsors of the contest are Michigan Apple Committee, Pioneer Sugar, Zehnder’s, WSGW and Bavarian Maytag.

The winners each received $500, $250 and $100 respectively, along with several other prizes.

The contest kicks off Zehnder’s Snowfest, a national ice-carving competition that runs through this weekend in downtown Frankenmuth.

Michigan Apple Committee is a grower-funded nonprofit organization devoted to promotion,

education and research activities to distinguish the Michigan apple and encourage its consumption in Michigan and around the world.  For more information, visit MichiganApples.com.
