(DeWitt, Mich.) – The January tradition that goes in search of Michigan’s Best Homemade Apple Pie just got even better. And the change has nothing to do with pie.
A new category has been added to the statewide competition, sponsored in part by the Michigan Apple Committee, allowing contestants to submit all types of apple recipes, in addition to their favorite apple pies.
“We thought it was time to turn up the heat in this competition,” said Holly Whetstone, MAC marketing/communications specialist. “So we decided to add a new general apple recipe contest to our popular pie competition.”
The events will both take place Wednesday, Jan. 26 in Frankenmuth: Favorite Apple Recipe Contest at 10 a.m. and Michigan’s Best Apple Pie at 1 p.m.
Amateur bakers (no professionals allowed) are encouraged to submit their recipes for preliminary judging by Dec. 31. A panel of chefs will review the entries and decide those worthy of competing the day of the event.
“The recipe contest is like icing on the pie - so to speak,” said Whetstone. “Not only will we determine the state’s best apple pie, we will taste all types of apple dishes from entrees, appetizers and desserts.”
Bakers of the top three best pies (recipes must include Pioneer Sugar) will receive $500, $200 and $100, respectively. Awards for the general apple recipes are $250, $150 and $100. For rules and entry form, visit MichiganApples.com/2011-michigans-best-apple-pie-contest.html.
