(DeWitt, Mich.) - Michigan Apple School Sweepstakes is drawing to a close, with just two weeks left for schools across Michigan, Illinois and Indiana to submit entry forms for a chance to win up to $5,000 in cash.

"The Michigan Apple industry is proud - especially in these challenging economic times - to give away over $20,000 in prizes to area schools for supporting locally grown produce," said Denise Donohue, executive director of the Michigan Apple Committee (MAC).

To enter, schools are asked to collect Michigan Apple logos from the bags of apples.  For each logo collected the name of the school will be entered into the random computerized drawing.  Entry forms must be postmarked by April 15, 2009 to be eligible.

Sponsored by the Michigan Apple Committee, the Michigan Apple School Sweepstakes got its start three years ago.  The sweepstakes originated to assist schools while helping to raise awareness about the importance of supporting local farmers.

"It's estimated that for every bite taken from a Michigan Apple, a nickel is contributed back to the state's economy," said Donohue.  "All in all, the apple industry generates about $700 million a year to Michigan's economy."

The drawing will take place May 1 with two schools each receiving prizes in the amounts of $5,000, $3,000 and $1,000.  MAC has added a new feature to the sweepstakes this year, giving schools an extra incentive to collect the most Michigan Apple logos.  The top two schools submitting the most will each win a new computer.

MAC is a grower-funded, nonprofit organization devoted to market development, education and research activities to distinguish the Michigan apple and encourage its consumption by consumers in Michigan and around the world.
