(Grand Rapids, Mich.) - Amber Nyblad of Casnovia is the new 2009 Michigan Apple Queen, recently selected from a field of contestants competing to be the next ambassador on behalf of the state's apple industry.
The daughter of Nels and Luanne Nyblad, Amber attends Hope College and in her spare time enjoys hiking, traveling, playing guitar and fishing. After graduation, she plans to pursue a graduate degree through a program affiliated with the Peace Corps.
"I look forward to the privilege of serving as Michigan Apple Queen and will work hard to promote the industry and the rich heritage that our growers have achieved," said Amber. "This is such a very exciting opportunity and great honor for me."
The 57th Michigan Apple Queen pageant took place Tuesday, Dec. 9 at the Amway Grand Plaza hotel in Grand Rapids. A panel of judges ranked the contestants on poise, apple knowledge and beauty following a private interview, as well as an appearance on stage in front of an audience of over 200.
Jessica Zelenock of Grand Rapids was named 1st Runner-Up. The daughter of Dale and Ginny Momber, and Chris and Chris Zelenock, Jessica attends Sparta High School.
Michigan Apple Committee Executive Director Denise Donohue said the Queen and her Court represent the state's apple industry at various events from festivals and fairs to schools and grocery stores.
"Our Queen serves first and foremost as an industry ambassador teaching kids and informing the general public about Michigan Apples," said Donohue. "She is both a face and a voice for the industry."
Queen contestants must be between 17 and 23 and have a link to the apple industry. The Michigan Apple Committee sponsors the annual pageant.
