“Meg the Intern” – The Places You’ll Go!

Michigan Apple Committee posted on March 25, 2015 |

I cannot believe that I have been the Michigan Apple Committee Intern for almost 8 months now! I feel so lucky to work with such great people everyday and learn about the Michigan Apple Industry in the process. Before I started working here I was not a huge fan of apples; that is except for the apples I got from my hometown cider mill. Little did I know I was just partial to Michigan Apples, for their impeccable flavor, crisp bite and perfect size for an afternoon snack. All of my family and friends are now well aware of the reasons why I love Michigan Apples, as I make sure to have my parents look for our logo when shopping for apples at our local grocery store. We even looked for and found them in other states accompanied by our bins!

Not only am I learning more about how important the apple crop is to Michigan’s economy, but I also get to help market apples by producing a lot of writing material for our communications plan. However, my favorite part is meeting apple growers, researchers and other people vital to the success of this industry.

Within my first week as the MAC intern, I was able to attend the Fourth Annual MAA Golf Outing. I was fortunate to meet so many growers and shippers. It was nice to finally put a face with all of the names I had been talking to on the phone and writing about for our Website. I was able to see a lot of them again at the grower luncheon in December and meet the 2015 Michigan Apple Queen Contestants! It was so cool seeing how passionate each contestant was toward their role in the Michigan Apple Industry.

However, it will be hard to beat participating in Autumnfest at MSU! I helped pass out Gala, Fuji and Jonagold apples to the public and it was so fun having people come up to our booth and telling us how much they love Michigan Apples. Even kids were coming back for seconds! Autumnfest was the same day as the Michigan State vs. Ohio State game so we had a lot of college football fans eating our apples and commenting on their great flavor.

It has been a great experience getting to know the farmers who grow the apples, as well as the consumers who buy them. From what I have observed, both sides feel rewarded due to Michigan Apples.

I would recommend this internship to any student majoring in public relations, communications or journalism. I have learned so much and I have been able to practice my writing and social media skills in a “real world” office setting! I recently got to create a video about my internship.
